Why Not a Marathon?

“Why don’t we run a marathon?” my wife said casually on the way home from our 5K.

I said, “Why not?” and that was the start of one of the most formative things we’ve ever done.

A marathon is 26.2 miles. A 5K is 3.1. Big difference.

We found a training plan in a book and started running 4–5 days a week. Each Saturday, we’d run a little further. One week it was 8 miles, the next 9, and so on.

I learned a few huge lessons that apply far beyond running:

Positive self-talk matters.
When the voice in your head says “This hurts,” our mantra was: “But it doesn’t matter.”

Say your goals out loud.
We told everyone we were marathoners. It helped lock in our identity and accountability.

Progress is addictive.
Each week, we ran farther than we ever had before. That sense of growth changed how I thought about what's possible.

Ever committed to a goal that felt ridiculous at first but changed your life? I’d love to hear it.
